Around the year 1000 AD warlike people, the so-called "tjuder", roam in northern Scandinavia. As they brutally kill a family in a remote area, including the parents and their little daughter, the family's teenage son, Aigin, observes the slaughter. He manages to flee from these killers and reaches a camp with other Sámi whose inhabitants are worried if he has been able to hide his track. Afraid of the murderous people, they decide to flee to the coast. The boy stays alone to avenge his family's murder. Unfortunately, they get him before he can do anything and force him to lead them to the other Sámi. He guides them but has a plan to destroy the barbarous people before reaching the camp.

In medieval Finland, the Sami -- a tribe of peaceful hunter-gatherers -- struggle to survive in a frozen wasteland. Aigin (Mikkel Gaup), a young Sami, watches in horror as his parents and sister are brutally murdered in a surprise attack by the Tchudes, a rival tribe of violent nomads. Though Aigin flees to safety, the Tchudes follow his tracks to another encampment. Abducted and forced to comply with Tchude demands, Aigin feigns weakness -- while secretly planning his own shocking revenge.

Nils Gaup's The Pathfinder, or Ofelaš as it is in the language of the Sami people of Norway, was nominated for best foreign film at the 1987 Oscars, and was the first Norwegian feature film to do so since Nine Lives in 1957. In the film, we meet 16-year-old Aigin, who lives in the 11th century in what is now called Finnmark in far northern Norway. Witnessing his family being massacred by the nomadic Russian tribe, the Chudes, Aigin sets out for revenge, but is captured and used as a guide for the Chudes on the dangerous roads.
